This is an abbreviation for Solid State Drive. This is a new type of computer hard drive which utilizes flash storage to retain data, as opposed to the older style mechanical hard drive. Older traditional hard drives (HDD) utilize a physical disk which spins at a high rate to read and write data. Because it is a physical spinning disk, it is inherently susceptible to mechanical failure and “wear and tear” over time. Solid State Drives do not utilize physical moving parts and, therefore, are faster and more reliable than traditional hard drives.
